Roots and Wings: Why Bihar's Youth are Choosing to Lead Locally
The brain drain is reversing. A new generation of Bihari youth is choosing to stay back and build their state. They have wings to fly, but their roots keep them grounded.

There is a famous saying: "Give your children two things: one is roots, the other is wings." For a long time, the youth of Bihar only wanted wings. They wanted to fly away from the lack of opportunity, the caste politics, and the stagnation. But today, we are seeing a beautiful phenomenon: the return of the roots.
The Reverse Migration
The COVID-19 pandemic was a turning point. Millions of migrant workers returned home, realizing the fragility of their lives in big cities. But along with them came young professionals—engineers, MBAs, artists—who realized that they could work from anywhere. They looked at their home state with fresh eyes. They saw not just problems, but possibilities.
Changemakers in Action
We are meeting young leaders who are starting agri-tech startups to help farmers. We are seeing design graduates working with artisans to revive traditional crafts. We are seeing law graduates starting NGOs to fight for the rights of the marginalized. These are not people who couldn't make it elsewhere; these are people who *chose* to make it here.
One such leader is Priya, who left a corporate job in Bangalore to start a waste management unit in her village. "I was tired of complaining about the garbage," she says. "I decided to be the one to clean it up." Today, her unit employs 15 local youth and keeps the village spotless.
Cultivating Leadership
At Divya Bihar Mission, our goal is to nurture this spirit. We don't just want to create employees; we want to create employers. We want to create leaders who are 'Glocal'—globally competent but locally rooted. We provide mentorship, incubation support, and a network for these young changemakers.
The narrative of Bihar is changing. It is no longer a story of helplessness. It is a story of resilience, innovation, and hope. And the authors of this new story are the youth of Bihar.
