Guardians of the Ganges: Community-Led Water Conservation
Water is life, especially in an agrarian state. Learn how communities are reviving traditional ponds and protecting the holy Ganges from pollution.

Bihar is a land of rivers. The mighty Ganga cuts through the heart of the state, fed by tributaries like the Kosi, Gandak, and Sone. Yet, paradoxically, we face a dual crisis of floods and droughts. The solution lies not in more concrete dams, but in reviving the traditional wisdom of water management.
The Ahar-Pyne System
Centuries ago, the people of South Bihar developed the 'Ahar-Pyne' system—an ingenious network of embankments and channels that harvested floodwater for use during dry months. It was a decentralized, community-managed system. Over the years, this system fell into disrepair. We are working with local communities to revive these structures. It is low-cost, eco-friendly, and highly effective.
Pond Rejuvenation in Mithila
In North Bihar, the culture was centered around ponds (Pokhars). Every village had multiple ponds for bathing, irrigation, and fishing. Tragically, many have been encroached upon or turned into garbage dumps. We have launched a movement to 'Reclaim the Pokhar'. Youth clubs are mobilizing to desilt and clean these ponds. A revived pond recharges the groundwater, improves the micro-climate, and supports biodiversity.
The Ganga Prahari
The health of the Ganga is non-negotiable. We are training 'Ganga Praharis' (Guardians of the Ganga)—local volunteers who live along the river banks. They monitor water quality, prevent the dumping of plastic and waste, and plant trees to prevent soil erosion. They educate pilgrims about responsible worship.
We teach our students that water is not a commodity; it is a deity. 'Jal hi Jeevan hai' (Water is Life) is not just a slogan; it is a survival imperative. By becoming guardians of our water bodies, we are securing the future of Bihar.
